Terms of Service

Last updated

These terms apply to Backlog on the web (usebacklog.app) and in the iPhone and iPad app. They are an agreement between you and CRTYX HOLDINGS LIMITED ("we", "us"). By creating an account or using Backlog, you agree to these terms. If you do not agree, please do not use the service.

Backlog is a trading name of CRTYX HOLDINGS LIMITED, registered in England and Wales, company no. 12383952. Registered office: 8 Queen Eleanor Avenue, Grantham, NG31 8PT, United Kingdom.

The service

Backlog lets you track the movies, TV shows, games and books you want to watch, play or read, log your progress, rate and review them, and get notified about new episodes and seasons. Backlog is free to use and shows no advertising. We may add, change or remove features over time.

Your account

You must be at least 13 years old to create an account. You can sign up with an email address and password, or with Sign in with Apple. You are responsible for keeping your sign-in details secure and for activity on your account, and for keeping your email address up to date so we can reach you. You can delete your account at any time from Settings.

Your content

Your notes, ratings and reviews belong to you. To run the service, you give us a worldwide, non-exclusive, royalty-free licence to store, copy and display them in Backlog. For public reviews, this includes showing them on Backlog's public title pages, on your public profile and in the apps, where search engines may index them. This licence lasts until you delete the content or your account, apart from short-lived copies in caches and backups.

You are responsible for what you post, and you confirm you have the right to post it.

Community guidelines

Reviews are for sharing what you thought of a film, show, game or book. Backlog has no tolerance for objectionable content or abusive users. When posting a review, do not:

  • post anything illegal, or that encourages illegal activity;
  • harass, bully, threaten or demean anyone, or attack people based on race, ethnicity, nationality, religion, sex, gender identity, sexual orientation, disability or age;
  • post sexually explicit content, graphic violence for its own sake, or anything involving the exploitation of children;
  • share anyone's personal information, including your own contact details;
  • post spam, advertising, links for promotion, or the same review repeatedly;
  • copy someone else's writing without permission, or impersonate anyone;
  • reveal major plot points without turning on "Contains spoilers".

Reviews are limited to 500 characters. You must accept these guidelines before you publish your first public review.

Reporting, blocking and moderation

You can report any review using the Report option next to it, and block any user so you no longer see their reviews. We review reports and may hide or remove content that breaks these terms. Reviews that receive several reports may be hidden automatically while we check them. We may restrict or close accounts that repeatedly or seriously break the rules.

If you think we made a mistake, for example in removing your review, or you want to complain about content or about how we handled a report, email [email protected] with the details. We will look into it and reply as soon as we reasonably can.

Imports

You can import your own exports from Letterboxd, Goodreads and other services. Only upload files that belong to you. Backlog is not affiliated with, endorsed by or connected to Letterboxd, Goodreads or any other service you import from. Imported reviews are private until you choose to publish them.

Tips

The app offers optional tips to support Backlog. Tips are voluntary, do not unlock any features, and are processed by Apple under its terms. Refunds are handled by Apple in line with its policies and your legal rights.

Acceptable use

Do not misuse Backlog. That means you must not:

  • try to get unauthorised access to the service, other accounts or our systems;
  • interfere with or overload the service, or get round rate limits or other protections;
  • scrape or harvest content or data with automated tools, except through the official API and your own API keys, used within their limits;
  • use Backlog for any unlawful purpose.

Third-party data

Information about titles, including posters, covers, descriptions and air dates, comes from TMDB, RAWG, Google Books, Open Library and the New York Times. It belongs to those providers or the rights holders, and may sometimes be wrong or incomplete. This product uses the TMDB API but is not endorsed or certified by TMDB.

Backlog's intellectual property

The Backlog name, logo, design and software belong to CRTYX HOLDINGS LIMITED. These terms do not give you any right to use them, apart from using the service as intended.

Using the iOS app

If you use the Backlog app from the App Store, Apple's Licensed Application End User License Agreement also applies. If it conflicts with these terms, these terms apply as between you and CRTYX HOLDINGS LIMITED. Apple is not responsible for the app or its content, and has no obligation to provide maintenance or support for it.

Availability and changes

We aim to keep Backlog running smoothly, but we cannot promise it will always be available or free of errors. We may suspend or end the service, ideally with notice. If we ever close Backlog, we will try to give you time to export your data.

Liability

Backlog is provided free of charge and "as is". To the extent the law allows, we are not liable for any indirect or consequential loss, or for loss of data, profits or goodwill, arising from your use of the service. We recommend exporting your library from time to time.

Nothing in these terms limits or excludes liability for death or personal injury caused by negligence, for fraud, or for anything else that cannot be limited or excluded by law. Nothing in these terms affects your statutory rights as a consumer.

Ending your use

You can stop using Backlog and delete your account at any time. We may suspend or close your account if you seriously or repeatedly break these terms. Where reasonable, we will tell you why first.

Changes to these terms

We may update these terms. We will change the date at the top of this page, and if a change is significant, we will tell you in the app or by email before it takes effect. If you keep using Backlog after a change takes effect, you accept the updated terms.

Governing law

These terms are governed by the law of England and Wales, and the courts of England and Wales can hear disputes about them. If you live in Scotland or Northern Ireland, you can also bring a claim in your local courts.
